Boat names have long been a subject of quayside conversations and often the stories behind a particular name are pretty interesting too - some are personal, some historical, and some are just humorous. And so for our series on the history and construction of Raja Laut, we can think of no better place to start than to talk about whats behind the name “Raja Laut”.

The name “Raja Laut” means “King of the Seas” in Malay, and was chosen in hommage to the Malay Archipelago - the history, the people, the cultures. “Raja”, itself a derivation of the hindustani for king, is an honorific title used in ancient times from Srivijaya to Malacca, Makassar to Ambon. The type of vessel, the name, and the whole region really captured our imagination. Much thanks certainly goes to the writing of Joseph Conrad - and one can easily envision the schooner carrying adventurers and traders in his depictions of the exotic East. There is also the portrait, in the Sarawak museum, of James Brooke’s schooner “The Royalist”, which has a very similar design to Raja Laut and which young Brooke had purchased in England and then sailed across the world to explore what was then known as the Malay Archipelago.

In the late 19th Century Conrad sailed extensively through the Archipelago as a mate aboard the British Merchant Navy steamer “Vidar” and it was the intensity and richness of these experiences that provided the writer with much material for his novels. It was also during this time that a young Conrad came across a real life “Raja Laut” in the form of Captain William Lingard. Lingard was then a well-known figure in Singapore and throughout the Archipelago, where he had sailed his own ships and cargoes and amassed a considerable fortune.

Legend has it that on one of Lingards numerous voyages to Borneo he fought a large fleet of Bugis pirates (the most feared and skilled seafarers of the region), rescuing a surrounded Dutch man-of-war. His bravery on this occasion earned him the thanks of the King of Holland and he was made a Knight in the Order of the Netherlands Lion. Locally, he acquired the unofficial title “Raja Laut” bestowed by the Sultan of Gunung Tabor, and was known by this sobriquet among the Malays.

Nearly one hundred and fifty years later another “Raja Laut” is launched on the shores of Borneo, commissioned by a Malaysian company, designed and built by a multinational team of European and Asian boat builders, carpenters and shipwrights. East meets West, once again, in the Malay Archipelago… except that today the region abounds with holidaymakers hungering for eco-treasures rather than spices, for new adventures with a new “Raja Laut”… Contact john@rothwellcharters.com for more information on chartering the Raja Laut which can viewed in our catalogue.

The Georgia Rose is based in the wonderful old fortified town of Antibes. From there you may wish to explore the South of France taking in such places as Monte Carlo, Cannes (stopping off at the Cap de Antibes where the Captain will tender you to the Hotel de Cap for lunch, an experience not to be missed), Cap Ferrat, St. Tropez (maybe calling in at Club 55 for lunch and a night spent moored in the old port of St. Tropez with the world watching which is an experience you will not forget). Then why not visit the beautiful Poquelle Islands. On the way back spend a day anchored between the Lerin Islands and go ashore in the tender to explore and visit the old prison fort where The Man in the Iron Mask was imprisoned.

Alternatively maybe a cruise to Napoleon’s birthplace: the wild island of Corsica, to explore the wonderful west coast heading for the town of Bonifacio. From there, if time allow, it is only a short cruise across the straits to Sardinia and of course a must is a visit to Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda, the haunt of the world’s beautiful people in summer. No visit to the Costa Smeralda would be complete without spending at least one night anchored in Cala di Volpe.

A different choice would be to visit the Italian Riviera starting at the old town of San Remo. Then a short cruise to the pretty harbour of Portofino where you should not miss a meal at one of the world’s leading hotels: The Splendido. From there you could visit the island of Elba or again if time allows head south to Rome, Naples or Capri.

The choice is yours but be assured wherever you decide to cruise the Captain and crew of the Georgia Rose will ensure it will be a holiday you will remember for the rest of your life.

Mojito is a Moody 64 Performance Cruising Yacht, launched in 2002.

She is the perfect combination of a high performance sailing yacht capable of exhilarating blue water sailing…whilst her contemporary/stylish interior and spacious decks offer luxurious accommodation.

She sleeps up to 7 guests and 2 crew.

Mojito has a shoal fin keel that allows her into shallow waters, such as bays, usually inaccessible to boats of her size.

VERY KEEN to charter in CROATIA in 2008! Will consider charters in Italy, Greece & Turkey with minimal or no delivery fees. This lovely sailing yacht is best suited to 2 couples with 2-3 children. Her excellent British captain has extensive knowledge of the Mediterranean and guarantees your guests an amazing holiday! Captain Stuart would be delighted to discuss possible itineraries for Greece, Turkey, Croatia and beyond….

Feedback from Summer 2007:

“I just wanted to send you a quick note to thank both of you for everything on our amazing honeymoon. Everything was absolutely wonderful. With the captains extensive knowledge of the Adriatic sea and the chefs calorie filled meals, we couldn’t have been more pleased. We really couldn’t have had a better time anywhere on earth. The only mistake that we made was not hiring the Mojito as we continued to Venice, it would have been far better then our over priced hotel room!”

“The boat was over the top. It was a lot of money but worth every penny. The food was four stars and the captain could not have been nicer. The layout of the boat is perfect. I got a bunch of money back. Gave them nice tips. we had great weather, snorkeled, water-skied, drank and ate. They need a good pair of binoculars.”

“Mr B (the three week charter) has returned no written feedback, but did say that in 10 years of chartering, mostly as a fleet with his friends, this is the only one he’s been truly happy with, and the first time he did not complain, even though the water maker broke down in the second week, Stuart still managed to stay at anchor and just took water from the other yachts by tying up along side and using the hose - the charter was not compromised in any way, and the clients were very happy with their calm and collected captain, and again the superb food.”

“We had another honeymoon couple on board, we have no feedback other than they were very happy, and they were Royalty! They wedding had been covered in all the European magazines, but I am guessing they still want to keep a low profile, I’ll see if I can get at least one quote from them, which we can add.”

The acclaimed design team at Pearl Yachts, have combined innovation and style to create a remarkably luxurious and spacious yacht. The master and VIP state rooms are separated by the full length of the yacht, thus giving guests maximum privacy, whilst retaining the flexibility to add two twin cabins mid ship, one of which is occupied by the crew.

Having been shown at the 2006 London Boat Show she is now just over a year old, and is still as impressive as she was when new, even after her first charter season in 2007.

Each cabin is beautifully appointed and each has its own flat screen, plasma T.V. and stereo system. The Saloon and dining areas are arranged with comfy leather sofas in unstated chic decor. The saloon also boasts a 42″ Plasma screen with Sky TV.

SEA VISION will be returning to the South of France in Spring 2008, she will be ready and available for the Grand Prix and, or the Film Festival.

She then plans to cruise in the south of France, Italy, Corsica and Sardinia.

SEA VISION is an excellent smaller yacht to accompany a larger charter yacht for transfers, extra staff accommodation etc.

DAY CHARTERS WELCOME!
